The UK will permit foreign students to apply for an innovator founder visa without having to leave the nation.
This extensive, 82-page immigration White Paper was originally released back in May. It details how foreign students can apply for an Innovator Founder visa if they’re looking to establish and run an innovative business in the UK—one that truly stands out from anything else currently on the market.
To qualify, your business idea needs to show strong potential for growth, a clear capacity to create jobs, and the ability to scale up across both national and international markets.
Mark your calendars: this exciting new visa route officially kicks off on November 25th. It's initially valid for three years, with the fantastic perk of unlimited extensions. Plus, after just three years in the UK, successful applicants might even be eligible to apply for settlement!
Ready to apply? You'll need to get your business idea assessed by an approved endorsing body, meet an English language proficiency standard, be at least 18 years old, and demonstrate you have personal savings of at least £1,270. Keep in mind, you'll also need to check in with your endorsing body at both the 12-month and 24-month marks to demonstrate the progress your business is making.
Interestingly, these positive changes for innovator founders coincide with another recent update for international students: the post-graduation period to find employment has been adjusted from two years down to 18 months. The Home Office, which announced these specific changes will come into effect on January 1, 2027, stated that this adjustment is vital to ensure graduates contribute effectively to the UK economy.
